The 3rd Crusade:
The 3rd crusade started two years after Saladins' conquest of Jerusalam in 1187. Although the official crusade began in 1189, they began fighting before. During the span of three years, 1189-1192, many battles were fought and won by both sides. Although the two great army's fought each other, the great leaders (Richard and Saladin) never met in combat.
During the three year journey, the largest siege was the Siege of Acre. it is said that 600,00 men fought for control f the land. But it was the Christians how came out victorious after the siege. Although heavily down-sized, the men moved forward with incoming reinforcements from King Richard and King Phillip. After the seizing of Acne, Phillip returned home. It is not fully confirmed, but is said that Phillip and Richard never got along, but to keep moral high, seemed the best of friends.
Richard in 1191-1192 attempted many times to take over Jerusalem, but with no success. Surprisingly enough, he did acquire his nickname "The Lion-Hearted" from his many assults on the city. But Richard wanted more than fame, money, power. Now he wanted fear. Fear from the Muslim people, but his piety greed led to his down fall. With low numbers in men and supplies he and Saladin make a truce. Richard returns home, but is shipwrecked on the voyage. The king of Australia, whom Richard offended during the Siege if Acne, makes Richard pay a high ransom for his release. So Richard returns home unsuccessful.
